Julia Ager, CEO, Jus Agency

Q: Andrea, it’s such an honor to have you here as our first-ever female global expert interviewee. Can you give us a glimpse into your background and what you’re currently passionate about in your work?

Oh, thank you! I’m really excited to be here. I started out as a model when I was just 18 years old. But something just clicked in me, and I decided to take the leap into entrepreneurship. It all started when I invented the sticker wallet for phones. I even had the original utility patent for that product line. It was quite a wild ride, but you know what they say, with great things come great lessons. One of the biggest lessons was realizing that when something becomes too well-known, you can’t own it yourself anymore. I had this amazing product, and I thought it was going to make me a billionaire. But then, someone came along and said, “Hey, this is becoming too well-known, and you’re going to have a problem.” So, I ended up getting paid $300,000 to abandon the patent. At first, I was hesitant because I thought it was my golden ticket. But looking back, it was definitely worth it. Sometimes you have to let go to make room for something even better. And that’s been the story of my entrepreneurial journey.

Q: Amazing, what happened after that pivotal moment?

This was before I launched the Wallet and actually was the reason I launched the Wallet. I had a car accident that made me rethink my career path. I made a conscious decision to leave modeling behind and fully embrace the world of entrepreneurship. That’s when I started developing my own products. Let me tell you, it was quite a journey. I had no formal education in product development, but I dove right in and learned everything on the go. I launched a clothing line called ‘ need want love’ and even ventured into creating my own lollipop line called “Sukitz”. But the real game-changer for me was when I made the move to Hollywood. I saw the direction the market was heading, and I knew to make a big splash with product releases I had to partner with influencers and celebrities. That’s when I started working with big names in the industry like Kirstie Alley, Lance Bass, Kellan Lutz  and even the jake paul, Logan Paul and Cameron Dallas It was such an exhilarating time, and I gained so much experience from working with them.

Q: Can you share more about that time and what strategies worked for you in leveraging their influence?

I quickly realized the immense power of their influence in skyrocketing product sales and generating massive buzz around my brands. It became a top priority for me to actively involve celebrities in promoting and endorsing my products. One of my most memorable successes was with my lollipop line. Through the power of social media and celebrity endorsements, we managed to sell 200,000 units online in just three days. It was a groundbreaking achievement as it marked the first consumer product to go viral on social media back in 2011. I also organized a Twitter-thon, and the response was simply mind-blowing. That experience was my first glimpse into the incredible impact celebrities can have on product visibility and sales.

Q: What advice would you give to businesses in product-based industries who aim to achieve similar success through celebrity endorsements?

When it comes to working with celebrities, authenticity is the key. It’s not just about choosing a famous face; it’s about finding someone who genuinely resonates with your brand and aligns with your target audience. It’s like finding that perfect puzzle piece that completes the picture. So, my advice would be to focus on finding the right fit between the celebrity and product. Look for individuals who embody your brand values and have a genuine connection with your target audience.

Additionally, consider the reach and engagement of the celebrity’s following. You want to partner with someone who has a strong presence and can make a real impact in terms of driving visibility and generating interest in your product. Don’t underestimate the power of their network and connections as well. Celebrities often have access to a vast network of industry professionals, and tapping into that can open doors to exciting opportunities.

Q: For businesses that are just starting out, what areas would you recommend they focus on to drive growth and maximize their impact?

Starting out with limited budgets can be challenging, but resourcefulness is key. My motto is, “Don’t be afraid to hustle!” Look for partnerships and collaborations within your network. Leverage the power of connections and work together to amplify each other’s strengths. Sometimes, you have to get creative and think outside the box.

If you’re working with a small budget, prioritize online advertising. Platforms like Google ads and Facebook ads can provide cost-effective ways to reach a broader audience and drive traffic to your business. It’s all about getting your message out there and making an impact.

Another strategy that I’ve found success with is influencer marketing. Identify influencers in your niche and establish partnerships with them.

Q: What about some of the best advice that has been given to you throughout your journey?

I’ve been fortunate to have some incredible mentors and people who have shaped my entrepreneurial path. One piece of advice that really stuck with me was from someone who told me, “You’re never going to raise money for your celebrity consumer product incubator because you’re a woman.” It was a harsh truth, but it made me realize that as a woman in business, I might have to work harder and prove myself even more. It was a wake-up call, and it motivated me to push through the gender biases and succeed on my own terms. And you know what? I did it. I’ve proven that women can excel in the business world, and I’m proud to be part of that movement.

Q: How do you navigate the challenges of being a woman entrepreneur, especially in industries where the boys’ club mentality still exists?

Throughout my journey, I’ve encountered numerous challenges simply because I’m a woman. There are biases and barriers that we have to overcome. But you know what? I refuse to let that hold me back. I believe in creating my own opportunities and carving my own path.

One thing that has been crucial for me is building a strong network and surrounding myself with like-minded individuals who believe in my vision. Its not easy, I’ve had moments where my calls were ignored or dismissed simply because I’m a woman. But I’ve also found incredible support and camaraderie from other women entrepreneurs who have faced similar struggles. It’s about finding your tribe and creating a support system that propels you forward.

I’m also thrilled to see positive changes happening in the business landscape. There’s a growing awareness and demand for investing in women-led companies. It’s no longer just about ticking a diversity box; it’s about recognizing the immense value and potential that women bring to the table. I’m in the process  of starting  my own Women Empowerment Fund, where we will  invest in women’s projects and services. It’s a way for me to support other women on their entrepreneurial journeys. also women can submit their ideas on my website to have my team bring their product to market. Ha ha

Q: For startups with limited budgets, what marketing strategies would you recommend they focus on?

First and foremost, leverage the power of your network. Connections are gold in the business world. Reach out to your contacts, attend events, and forge partnerships with individuals and businesses that align with your target audience. Collaborate, support each other, and tap into their networks. Sometimes, the best marketing comes from genuine word-of-mouth recommendations.

Additionally, embrace the digital landscape. Social media platforms provide an incredible opportunity to connect with your target audience directly. Create engaging content, leverage influencers, and utilize targeted online advertising. With a well-crafted strategy, you can reach a broader audience and generate interest in your brand.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Get creative with your marketing campaigns. Consider guerilla marketing tactics, experiential events, or even grassroots initiatives. Find unique ways to capture attention and make a lasting impression.

Q: Can you recommend a book, podcast, or course that has had a profound impact on you?

One podcast that I highly recommend is the “All-In Podcast” by Elon Musk’s inner circle. It’s an absolute goldmine of insights and discussions about the future and where things are heading. They delve into topics like AI, technology, and the ever-evolving landscape of business. It’s a thought-provoking podcast that keeps me engaged and inspired.

Q: Lastly, is there anything else you would like to share or add?

When it comes to building a successful business, it’s not just about the products or the marketing strategies. It’s about the people you surround yourself with. Trust and collaboration are key. Find partners, consultants, and team members who align with your vision, and together, you can create something truly remarkable!  With that said, we have started our own Celebrity Agency – Symboliq Celebs with a Chicago Agency.  https://symboliqcelebs.com/   Remember, success is a team effort, and with the right people by your side, the possibilities are endless.
